This is another old one. I wrote this in the mid 2000’s when Susan and I had barely been married twenty-five years. I thought that was a long time, but only now after 43 years, does this song’s message really hit home. Relationships take a lot of work and giving up is easy. I still haven’t performed the role of partner very well, but we are still working, making room for one another, and accepting the whole package. We take things one day at a time.
Well, you stuck with me through thick and thin
I don’t want to know if you’d do it again
What I thought was easy’s been hard as hell
What I thought I could do, I didn’t do so well
[Refrain]
But if you won’t leave me
And I’ll just stay
I know we can make it one more day
I know we can make it through another day
Well, the lines on my face
And the gray in your hair
Like battle scars and badges we wear
Paint a picture of a life of hate and love
I guess that love won out—or we just didn’t care
But if you won’t leave me
And I’ll just stay
I know we can make it one more day
I know we can make it through another day
When I look at you, I see myself
You’re right there with me when I crawl inside my shell
There’s still one thing I can’t explain
How we can be so different and still so much the same
So come with me, sit by my side
There’s a few more curves left on this ride
But if you’ll have me, and I’ll take you
We’ll hold on tight, we’ll make it through
But if you won’t leave me
And I’ll just stay
I know we can make it one more day
I know we can make it through another day
Yes, I know we can make it through another day
Honey, I know we can make it through another day
