I worte this song during Christmas of 2023. One night I went outside where we live in Tennessee. We’re away from any light pollution and there was a full moon on display. It was so bright and blue that you could not see the stars. I remembered being a kid and listening to the Christmas story on Peanuts “Merry Christmas Charlie Brown” where Linus teaches Charlie Brown what Christmas is all about. As I stared at the sky and thought about that story I felt like the kid who discovers Santa Claus isn’t real. I wanted so much to believe the Christmas story, but I honestly wondered aloud if it was true. The Christmas story includes some very hopeful promises yet the world doesn’t seem to acknowlege them. Whatever guiding star the shepherds may have seen was not visible to me on this night.
Shepherds in the fields
Angels in the sky
Peace and love to all
A little baby’s cry
I wonder if it’s true
I wonder if it’s right
The Moon’s an awful Blue
The Stars aren’t out tonight
A rainbow in the air
A promise from above
The end of all despair
A world that’s full of love
I wonder if it’s true
I wonder if it’s right
The Moon’s an awful Blue
The Stars aren’t out tonight
A place with golden streets
My daddy should be there
Will there be good food to eat?
Will I have to cut my hair?
But I wonder if it’s true
I wonder if it’s right
The Moon’s an awful Blue
The Stars aren’t out tonight
Yes I wonder if it’s true
I wonder if it’s right
The Moon’s an awful Blue
The Stars aren’t out tonight
The Moon’s an awful Blue
The Stars aren’t out tonight
