I wrote this one between 4:00 am and 6:00 am one morning in 2025. A few people know what I mean by the term “Monkey Brain.” It’s when your mind wakes you up before you want to get up, and hops on the hampster wheel of thinking about everything you need to do, everything you don’t need to do, or everything someone else needs to do, and find a solution to them all before 6 am. So you decide to go ahead and get out of bed, make coffee and start making lists and solve the problems, only to find that once you’re up, the monkey is gone, and the urgency to solve something has disappeared.
This is also the first song that features Wyatt (me) on vocals.
It’s 4 am and the thing I dread
Is the hamster wheel going round in my head
I got a hundred six problems I’m tryin to resolve
And fifty seven more that the world needs to solve
It’s like my mind’s plugged in to a ride at the fair
My brain is the Scrambler In a haunted house scare.
Monkey get outta my brain
The way you rattle around’s drivin’ me insane
I wish you’d leave me alone I wish you’d let me sleep
I’m about to go bananas
From this dirty little creep
The moon shines bright, the clock ticks loud
I’m alone with my thoughts but it’s a noisy crowd
Every one I know is needing something from me
Things I need to fix, places I need to be
Where’s the switch to turn this off?
I’m about to go postal,
I’m about to blast off
Monkey get outta my brain
The way you rattle around’s drivin’ me insane
I wish you’d leave me alone
I wish you’d let me sleep
I’m about to go bananas
From this dirty little creep
It’s 5 AM so I guess I’ll rise
Pour my coffee but to my surprise
That monkey he ain’t nowhere to be found
As soon as I’m up he goes underground
So I’ll spend some time just to contemplate
He’ll be back again tomorrow at three fifty eight.
Monkey get outta my brain
The way you rattle around’s drivin’ me insane
I wish you’d leave me alone
I wish you’d let me sleep
I’m about to go bananas
From this dirty little creep
