If I Fly

In late summer 2025, some believed that Jesus was returning to earth on Septermber 23 and “rapture” the true believers into heaven. A relative who I genuinely love called us one evening a few weeks before the expected event concerned that maybe we weren’t ready. This song was written early the next morning. I guess since I’m writing this now, we are still here. The song reflects quiet skepticism, spiritual tension, and a grounded sense of love and longing.

Got a call last night from someone I love

Said the trumpet’s gonna blow from the heavens above

She said, “Get right now, ’cause you won’t get to pack—

Jesus is comin’, and He ain’t lookin’ back.”

Found an internet preacher, said he’d heard the Word,

Jesus touchin’ down on the twenty-third

He was on TikTok and Spotify, too—

Did he earn a little cash with every single view?

[Refrain]

If I fly, will I miss the mess?

The friends I love and the daily stress

If the loudest folks get called away,

Maybe we could love like Jesus someday

I ain’t in a rush, but I’ll be fine

They can float on up

I’ll just cast my line

I’ve seen too much of this holy parade

Where love’s just a word and truth gets played

Where the ones who shout about pearly gates

Are quoting more Bible and spreading more hate.

Woke up to sunlight and a sky so wide,

Cat on the counter, wife by my side

Poured my coffee, took it slow

Thought, “If He’s comin’, would I even wanna go?”

If I fly, will I miss the mess?

The friends I love and the daily stress

If the loudest folks get called away,

Maybe we could love like Jesus someday

I ain’t in a rush, but I’ll be fine

They can float on up

I’ll just cast my line

Maybe heaven’s not some place we fly

But coffee at dawn with my wife nearby

Maybe grace ain’t earned in the air above

But found in the dirt when we choose to love

If I fly, let it feel like home

Not streets of gold, just fields I’ve known

Let my grandkids laugh and the coffee pour

Let the gate stay open, not locked no more

I ain’t in a rush, but I’ll be fine

They can float on up

I’ll just cast my line
