This was a fun one I wrote over a few days in 2025 after spending more time on social media than I should have. Because I have friends from diverse political persuasions, I found it humorous (and slightly disturbing) to see how social media algorithms attract like-minded people to posts that they will likely agree with. Then the authors of these posts believe themselves to be right because all their friends belive so. So I started to imagine two people on opposite ends of the social and political spectrum, falling in love at a social rally where they represented their opposing views. Coexistence is the result.
Jim posts every day around two and ten
You’d a thought he appeared on Fox and Friends
Gets likes from the women and all of his buds
And they give a thumbs up while the comments flood
He was a football star, prom king, too
Got a job from his dad, like rich kids do
He’s never left town, and he never had to
The world outside just ain’t his view
He’s always been first at least in his town
Quotes amendment number two like he’s got it down
But he’s never read it all, that’d be too long
And he’ll sure tell you why you are wrong.
[chorus]
They got posts full of pride, posts full of proof
No room for doubt, no space for truth
If you don’t agree, then you’re clearly confused
Cause smart don’t trend and facts get refused.
Betty got her degree in middle class girl studies
Learned to critique while brunchin’ with her buddies
Got a stickered laptop and a hemp-lined coat
And talks about justice with a condescending note
She’s got a Subaru wagon and a rescue pup
But lights up a smoke when the day gets tough
It’s American Spirits — one pack a day
While she lectures the world on the planet’s decay
Her friends all agree, they like and they cheer
So she must be right no ignorance here
She hashtags peace, she hashtags rage
Then condemns the world from her echo stage
They got posts full of pride, posts full of proof
No room for doubt, no space for truth
If you don’t agree, then you’re clearly confused
Cause smart don’t trend and facts get refused.
Jim says freedom, Betty says truth
Both sound the same in a voting booth
She thinks he’s heartless, he thinks she’s blind
They both think the world’s been redesigned
He loves a flag, she loves a cause
But both treat kindness like a fatal flaw
They’re screaming in phrases, some call em “memes”
But I say they’re both just a little extreme
They got posts full of pride, posts full of proof
No room for doubt, no space for truth
If you don’t agree, then you’re clearly confused
Cause smart don’t trend and facts get refused.
They met at a rally on the courthouse yard
She screamed “Save the Planet” He said, “Go home lib-tard!”
She called him a fascist, he was never afraid
But then Cupid let loose like a love grenade
Her eyes shot sparks, his chest puffed wide
And they drew up close, standin’ side by side
Now they’re tangled up in a passionate knot
Behind a port-a-john in the parkin’ lot.
(What’s that smell?)
They had posts full of fire, posts full of spite
Now they post funny pics of their dog at night
Cause somewhere in the middle, past right and wrong
Is a place where we all oughta be in this song.
Now they still debate who’s wrong or right
But only over what to eat at night
She likes Thai, he wants wings and beer
So they order both and they do it all year.
(Order out that is… )
They post a lot less, they laugh a lot more
He loves her dog, “Joe” she hung a flag on the door
But there’s one thing Betty could not resist
Put a sticker on his truck, says “CoExist.”
